Students during recess peeking over classroom wallRebuilding Haiti through the Empowerment of Girls is a project of the U.S. Federation Sisters of St. Joseph to help rebuild Haiti after the earthquake of 2010.  After research and study education and specifically the education of girls became the focus of the Haiti Project Why the education of girls? It makes a future in which opportunity and choices are possible, choices that many adult Haitians, do not have because they are illiterate.Helping one another with school work

In collaboration with Mission Haiti,Inc (http://www.missionhaitiinc.org/about-us/education/), the Sisters of St. Joseph made a commitment to education 10 girls from level 1-13; to support their teachers with scholarships to complete their certification; and to help rebuild the secondary school which was destroyed by the 2010 earthquake.

Now into our sixth year, we can are grateful to be part of the lives of Ferlanda, Laurie, Rose, Kimberlie, Princesse, Tamara, Talia, Sorina, Sheidna, and Rose who are now in the 5th and 6th grades.  Their teachers continue to move toward teaching certificates, and the secondary school, College Coeur de Marie was recently completed.

Haiti Calendar 2018 Federation

This project has extended beyond Sisters and Associates to families, co-workers, and friends by making available an annual LentenCalendar.  We again are making available the Lenten Calendar in 2018 in our efforts to both educate regarding the critical importance of education for girls and to support them.  While this effort benefits the children in Haiti, it also offers each of us an opportunity to grow in God’s compassion and love and to connect with Haiti, a country where the majority of its people live in dire circumstances of poverty.

This year let your almsgiving be prayer and fasting for others.  We invite you to join us to make a difference in the lives our neighbors in Haiti. In the words of Malala Yousafzai, “So let us lead a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty, and terrorism.  And let us pick up our books and our pens.  They are our most powerful weapons.”  You can download the 2018 Lenten Project at http://www.cssjfed.org/justice-peace.

Thank you for joining us and may you be blessed in abundance.
